Newspapers, public officials and leaders in many walks of life joined today in paying tribute to Jesse Isidor Straus, former Ambassador to France, department store executive and philanthropist, who died yesterday of pneumonia at the age of 64.
Rabbi Samuel Goldenson will officiate at funeral services at Temple Emanu-El at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. Many prominent persons are included in the list of honorary pallbearers.
The New York Times declared in an editorial that Mr. Straus “offered his life to his country and a better world no less truly than his compatriots who lost theirs in combat services.”
His death “robs this country of a most useful man and devoted citizen, the Jewish people of a respected leader and the commercial world of a real and administrative genius,” commented the Herald-Tribune.
Similar tributes were contained in editorials published in the New York American, the World-Telegram and other newspapers throughout the country.
President Roosevelt, Governor Lehman and Secretary of State Hull were among the numerous friends and associates who expressed regret at Mr. Straus’ death.
