Former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon said on his arrival here yesterday on a fact-finding mission that Israel has a right to keep the places taken in the war which had served as “springboards of aggression” against it until a settlement insuring Israel’s security was reached.
The Republican leader met with former Premier David Ben-Gurion at his home in Tel Aviv. He was welcomed at Lydda Airport by representatives of the Israel Foreign Ministry and the United States Ambassador, Walworth Barbour. At Athens airport, before he left for Israel, Mr. Nixon told reporters that there should be direct talks between the Arab states and Israel. He added there could not be a lasting Middle East settlement “without the joint guarantee of the United States and the Soviet Union.”
