Vice President Richard M. Nixon today commended the American Jewish Committee for its 12-year survey of civil rights gains in America and said such studies helped the nation portray American achievements to the world.
The report was presented to Mr. Nixon in his office by James H. Scheuer, chairman of AJC’s Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Committee, and Frederick F. Greenman, chairman of the Committee’s executive board.
The report stresses that “major barriers against significant civil rights progress in the United States are coming down at an accelerated pace.” It surveys civil rights gains in many phases of national life from 1948 to 1960.
Mr. Nixon told Mr. Scheuer and Mr. Greenman that America has been “taking the rap” on civil rights throughout the world and “not getting credit for our achievements,” Referring to the American Jewish Committee study, Mr. Nixor said “we must constantly have such re-examination.”
