Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei A. Gromyko met today with President Nixon for 70 minutes. White House press secretary Ronald Ziegler declined to identify the subjects discussed but said that the discussions between the President and Gromyko would continue at a dinner at Camp David tonight. Today’s meeting was attended by Secretary of State William P. Rogers and Dr. Henry Kissinger, the President’s advisor on national security affairs, Gromyko was accompanied by Soviet Ambassador Anatoly F. Dobrynin.
Ziegler said that all of the participants in the meeting would be present at Camp David tonight. He noted that the meeting was similar to the one the President had with Gromyko at this time last year. At that time, plans were discussed for the President’s visit to Moscow in May. It was understood that today’s meeting reviewed matters discussed at the summit conference last May which included a European security conference, trade relations and further scientific and cultural exchanges. It was considered most likely that the Middle East came up at today’s meeting but it was unknown whether the subject of Soviet Jewry was brought up.
