President Nixon has cabled Premier Golda Meir and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt that the time is ripe “to build a new structure of lasting peace in the world.” Nixon’s cables were in response to messages from both leaders congratulating him on his re-election. His message to Mrs. Meir read:
“Dear Madame Prime Minister. I want to express my deepest appreciation for your very gracious message on my re-election as President of the United States. It is my firm conviction that because of the progress we have made in reducing international tension over the past year, we now have the best opportunity since the end of World War II to build a new structure of lasting peace in the world. As our personal association over the past four years has been a source of great satisfaction to me, I look forward especially to working with you as we all press to this great goal.”
The President’s message to Sadat stated in part, “I am looking forward to maintaining our efforts, in cooperation with the leaders of the whole world, in order to realize this great objective” (of permanent peace in the world).
