A top administration source said today that President Nixon’s announcement that he will make a decision on whether to sell arms to Israel “within thirty days” had “no profound diplomatic significance.” Nixon announced his decision at a press conference Jan. 30. The official explained that under the National Security Agency system, consideration of the issue would reach the President’s desk in a month, and he was using the system’s timetable to alert the country on his forthcoming decision. Some question had been raised about Nixon’s timetable in light of French Premier Pompidou’s visit to Washington next week.
