Julius Caplikas, Minister of Interior, denied today in a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports published abroad that Lithuania had launched a campaign against the Jews.
Explaining the policy of the Government on the Jews, he promised there would be no political or economic discrimination against them. He said two Jews would be included in the new Parliament of fifty members.
Referring to a new artisans’ law under consideration, which some Jews have feared might be used as a basis for discrimination, Mr. Caplikas promised the law would not endanger the livelihood of Jewish artisans since the whole question would be reconsidered by the Chamber of Artisans and Jews would be consulted.
He declared that the Government would not prevent free competition, even in monopolized fields such as flax. He added that Jewish teachers would be permitted to receive Jewish training.
