Acting American Consul General Raymond Geist was officially informed by the Gestapo, secret state police that Israel A. Levitan, a correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, was no longer desired in Germany and would not be permitted to remain, despite the fact that no definite charges were lodged against him. Levitan thereupon left Germany.

During his arrest by the Gestapo officials, Levitan was questioned by agents of the secret police chiefly on remarks he was alleged to have made during a visit to the Berlin office of the New York Times.
