A leader of the Jewish community in the Irish Republic told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that there is not a word of truth in a story published in a local Jewish weekly that the Irish Republican Army has any links with Arab terrorists. The leader, who asked that he not be identified, said that the IRA has what he termed a sneaking respect for the Haganah and the Irgun of the pre-Israel State period and try to copy their tactics.
The story in the weekly brought a storm of protest from Jewish and non-Jewish readers. Jewish readers wrote that the story was a disservice to the Jews of Ireland. The Jews of Ireland, some 4,000, and those of Ulster, some 1,000, have stayed out of the conflict between the Catholics and Protestants in Ulster. But the Chief Rabbi of Ireland has condemned the death of 13 persons in Derry two weeks ago as an inhuman act. He refrained, however, from blaming the Ulster government or the British troops for this incident.
