The Jewish problem “does not exist in Spain,” writes the Rev. Manuel Grana, Spanish correspondent of the news service of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, in a dispatch from La Coruna. He states that Jews residing in Spanish possessions in Africa “live tranquilly in the exercise of their religion just as Moslems do. Their schools and synagogues function with absolute liberty.”
“Spain could not possibly be a theater of anti-Semitic propaganda,” the dispatch says. “The Arabs are Semites and they have much influence on the peninsula. Hispano-Arabic and Hispano-Jewish literature form an important part of the national literature. Abderraman the Caliph, Averroes the philosopher, and the two Hebrews, Juda Levy (Yehudah Halevy), the poet, and Maimonides, are a part of the historic culture of Spain.”
