Neither RELIGIOUS NOR POLITICAL MOTIVES WERE BEHIND LAST SUNDAY’S POLICE RAIDS IN THE CITY’S JEWISH QUARTER, IN WHICH 500 PERSONS WERE SEIZED FOR QUESTIONING, THE HOUSE OF DEPUTIES WAS TOLD TODAY BY INTERIOR MINISTER SZELL.
REPLYING TO AN INTERPELLATION ON THE RAIDS, M. SZELL DECLARED THEY WERE MERELY A MATTER OF TIGHTENING CONTROL OVER ALIENS IN THE INTEREST OF THE STATE AND THE POPULATION. IT WAS ALSO TO THE INTEREST OF HUNGARIAN JEWRY, HE ASSERTED, THAT “SUCH ELEMENTS, WHICH COST THE STATE A LOSS OF 50,000,000 PENGOES IN THREE YEARS THROUGH CURRENCY SPECULATION,” BE RENDERED HARMLESS.
M. Szell declared similar raids would be carried out in the future to assure the strictest control of foreigners. He said the police have been instructed to act with the utmost care to prevent Hungarian citizens from being involved.
