Employers who mistakenly hire ineligible aliens for confidential war work are not liable to prosecution if the employment was given in good faith, Attorney General Francis Biddle announced yesterday.
Mr. Biddle pointed out that the requirement that aliens not be employed in certain work has resulted in the barring of many native-born citizens unable to furnish documentary proof of their citizenship. This circumstance has seriously affected the manpower supply, he said.
It was again emphasized that aliens cannot be taken for only a very few confidential jobs, and even these are not barred to them if they get permission from the War or Navy Departments. Aliens who misrepresent their status, of course, are subject to severe penalties.
