Although it has officially been established that more than 600,000 Rumanian Jews were massacred by military officials and civilians, not one of the persons responsible for the atrocities has yet been executed.
In the first wave of war criminal trials 28 high ranking army and government officials were sentenced to die for their part in the murders, but the King pardoned every condemned man. Since that time no war criminal has been sentenced to death unless he was tried in absentia.
