A meeting between Acting Premier Yigal Allon, Foreign Minister Abba Eban and Dr. Gunnar V. Jarring ended Friday with no official indication that the United Nation’s emissary had changed his demand that Israel commit itself to withdrawal before negotiations with Egypt begin. After his half-day visit here, Dr. Jarring proceeded to Geneva where he was scheduled to report to UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.
(At the UN in New York, sources speculated that Dr. Jarring would suggest submitting a new questionnaire to Cairo and Jerusalem to supplant his Feb. 8, 1971 aide memoire which demanded Israel’s withdrawal. According to the sources, he may now tone down his earlier demand and instead seek an Israeli commitment that it does not intend to annex any territories.)
Dr. Jarring told correspondents on emerging from the Premier’s office that his talks here had been useful and that his mission would continue. His remark that there have been periods of “greater” and “lesser” intensity during his mission was taken by observers as a hint that a period of “lesser intensity” lies ahead.
