General Nobile, leader of the “Italia” polar expedition which ended in disaster and the loss of eight members of the crew, visited the mother of Aldo Pontremoli, the Jewish scientist who is among the missing members of the expedition.
General Nobile expressed the hope that the party which was lost in the “Italia’s” gondola when the top part of the airship was carried away, may still be alive.
He described to Madame Pontremoli, who is the daughter of the late Italian Jewish statesman, Luigi Luzzatti, the last days he spent with her son in the airship. General Nobile displayed grief at the feared loss of the party, and explained to the scientist’s mother how fortunate it was that the valuable work of observations on the flight made by Pontremoli had been saved.
