Further evidence of sympathy by leading non-Jews with the $6,000,000 United Jewish Campaign of New York is contained in letters received by Acting Chairman David M. Bressler, at the Hotel Biltmore headquarters of the drive. One of the letters was from U. S. Senator James W. Wadsworth, Jr., and the other from Welfare Commissioner Coler.
Senator Wadsworth in his letter to Mr. Bressler stated: “I wish you and your co-workers in the United Jewish Campaign in New York every possible measure of success. No one who realizes the plight in which so many poor Jewish people find themselves in certain portions of Europe can doubt for one moment that the $6,000,000 undertaking is well worth while. The funds which you are about to raise will save thousands upon thousands of desperately poor people who, otherwise, 1 fear, are doomed to a bitter end.
“I am sure that the response to your appeal for funds will be format and generous, as is always the case when Jews are asked to help those who suffer.”
Commissioner Coler wrote: “The campaign to raise $6,000,000 from the Jews of New York City as their share of the $15,000,000 fund being raised throughout the United States for the aid of the sick and needy Jews in foreign lands is a most commendable project deserving the fullest measure of success.
“Familiar as I am with the generosity of the Jews of New York City, who never tire of giving to those of other creeds as well as their co-religionists, I highly commend this appeal to the people of all creeds of the City of New York.
“Those giving may rest assured that every dollar will be spent for relief and reconstruction work overseas and without deduction for exhorbitant overhead charges.”
Among the contributions from non-Jews announced was $1,000 from E. W. Fairchild, president of the Fairchild Publications.
