For the first time in the history of this city, active Christian aid to help a purely Jewish enterprise will be sought, according to an announcement made today from the headquarters of the campaign to secure a new $125,000 home to house the aged and orphaned Jews in Worcester. Archibald Hillman, president of the Worcester United Jewish Charities was named chairman of the “Initial Gift Committee” composed of fifteen prominent Jews who will make an active canvass of non-Jews in the city and county who have signified a desire to help the drive.
The enlistment of non-Jewish support to help the campaign came after a series of conferences between George G. Greenspun of New York, who is direct-the work of the drive, and Mr. Hillman. Mr. Hillman stated that the move was made only after it became known that a large number of Gentiles had expressed a wish to help the campaign.” The campaign is being looked at in the nature of a community, rather than a particular racial undertaking, Mr. Hillman said.
Unqualified endorsement of the drive has been given by Mayor Michael J. O’Hara.
