The Jewish Federation of North Jersey was presented with an award, the first of its kind for a Jewish Federation in commemoration of the first anniversary of an aliya center, the first to be opened in a Federation office.
The unique award, the Makir Aliya Award, was presented by Ishayahu Tadmor, director of Israel Aliya Centers for North America, to Mrs. Marge Bornstein of Paterson, a Federation vice-president. He said the award demonstrated the commitment of the Federation and the Jewish community of North Jersey to the concept of aliya as a communal priority.
Tadmor lauded the Federation for its pioneering efforts in serving as host to an aliya center, pointing out that the Federation embraced the concept of aliya though it is not part of its structure. He expressed the hope that such close cooperation between aliya and Federation, and their staffs, in North Jersey would serve as a model for other American Jewish communities. Shmuel Levin, the Israeli emissary and local director of aliya for New Jersey, expressed his appreciation to the Federation for its hospitality in supporting his efforts to advocate aliya in the area.
