The Norwegian Parliament today approved legislation providing for the admission into this country of 78 more chronically ill DP’s from Germany, all of them suffering from tuberculosis. Forty-one of those to be admitted are Jews, sponsored by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
In recognition of the work being done on behalf of tubercular DP’s, and “in appreciation of this successful experiment,” JDC has given $50,000 to the government’s Rehabilitation Center, it was announced after the bill was passed in Parliament by Dr. Galtung Hansen, director of the Center.
At a press conference at which Dr. Hansen announced the JDC gift, Dr. Gerling Steen, chairman of the Norwegian Refugee Council, who is also president of the Norwegian Red Cross, announced that the 78 tubercular DP’s whose entry was approved today have already been selected. The first group of these ill refugees will arrive in August, Dr. Steen said. He added that the government has made provisions for admitting still other refugees during 1955-56.
