Denunciation of the anonymous author and the publishers Boni & Live-right of the recent novel “Haunch, Paunch and Jowel were voiced yesterday by Rabbi Samuel Schulman of Temple Beth-El, who spoke of the book as “stinking” and “le cherous”.
Horace Liveright, defending the book, later made public his answer to a protesting letter from Dr. Stephen S. Wise of the Central and Free Synagogues, in which Dr. Wise referred to the novel as “a degraded piece of work”. Rabbi Schulman refused to name this “stinking” book, but it was recognized instantly by the congregation.
Mr. Liveright maintains that the author died five years ago and offers as a proof that he is not anti-Jewish in the publication of the novel, the fact that he refused to publish less than a year ago a volume defending the Ku Klux Klan, although he was offered $10,000 for his imprint.
