A CHEERING REPORT

A keen observer, who recently visited Palestine, describes his impressions of the achievements of the Jewish rebuilders of the Jewish homeland. Wolf Senior, one of South Africa’s foremost Zionists and public-spirited citizens, who had gone to Palestine by plane, records his views in a highly interesting article in the Zionist Record of Johannesburg.

He pays this tribute to the Jewish women of Palestine:

“I take my hat off to the women. They are wonderful. They bring up the children, feed them, care for them, teach them, hike with them, milk the cows, work the land, lay bricks, make roads, work in citrus plantations — in fact, they work the same as the men do in every sense of the word, dressed in blue overalls, with their fine, healthy complexions, wonderful physique, tan color, and Jewish ‘chein.’ Their simplicity and naivete have captured my imagination, and it is very evident that cosmetics have no place in their #oilet.”

Mr. Senior writes as follows ###out the Jewish labor organization in Palestine:

“All honor to the Histadruth organization. They are responsible for most of the new settlements. Their hospitals are models of cleanliness and efficiency; they practically supply all the labor needed for the upbuilding of our land, be it the building trade, citrus plantations, or factories. They are a well-organized body of 42,000 strong, and having the power in their own hands, are seeing to it that the workers are not exploited they demand a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. The Histadruth seem to have a sense of responsibility and national conscientiousness in their desire to build up our Jewish Home on a sound national and economic basis.”

Of the German Jewish refugees who have settled in Palestine, Mr. Senior says:

“The German Jews are beginning to play their part in the upbuilding of Eretz Israel. I have seen many of them in the new settlements, young boys and girls on the land, fine, healthy Children, some of them very recent arrivals. They are taken in hand by the older Chalutzim and within a few months are able to converse in Hebrew. I predict they will become a fine acquisition for our land. I have also met young intelligent Germans driving buses, acting as chauffeurs, working as waiters in hotels. Many of them have opened tea rooms and small industrial concerns. Others again are professionals, mostly medical men, all working hard. I have spoken to many of them in different walks of life. They told me that they were very happy to be away from Germany, that they were distinctly happy to be in Palestine and that nothing would induce them to return to Germany, even if they could. My general impression is that the German Jews have given the right tone to the Yishuv and that Hitler’s loss is our gain.”

This is a most cheering estimate of the work of rehabilitation and of the spirit in which Eretz Israel is being rebuilt. With all the political difficulties and internal partisan friction, the constructive Jewish achievements in Palestine constitute one of the brightest and most inspiring pages of Jewish history.
