THE verdict in the Arlosor-off murder case is most amazing. For nine months Achimeier, Rosenblatt and Stavsky were kept in jai;. The preliminary investigation was conducted in the strangest manner. During the trial, Achimeier was set free because of lack of evidence against him Now Rosenblatt has been acquitted. But Stavsky was found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to death.

The charges against these men were that Rosenblatt shot Arlosoroff, that Stavsky was with him at the time and identified Arlosoroff by a flashlight, and that Achimeier had instigated the murderers. The man accused of having instigated the murder and the man charged with having fired the shot have been acquitted, while Stavsky, who was accused of having accompanied the murderer and indentified the victim, is sentenced to dent for “premeditated murder.” The Stavsky alibi, confirmed by many reliable witnesses, has been ignored.

In the light of all the testimony that has been made public, the verdict is as buffing as the entire Arlosoroff affair. The Arlosoroff murder mystery has not yet been solved.

MOSLEY’S FASCIST NAZISM

Sir Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, who kept assuring the people that his program was not anti-Semitic, has now come out in his true colors. He has swallowed the Nazi program of anti-Semitism. He is modeling his British Fascist party after the Hitler pattern. At a meeting of his Black Shirts in Olympia Hall, London, he denounced all the old political parties, demanding a “new deal of patriotism and progress.” The meeting was marked by disturbances, first fights, and by a number of arrests of hecklers who referred to Mosley as “public Enemy Number One.”

Mosley attacked the Jews. He denounced the Conservative Party for having Disraeli as its hero, the Liberals for having Sir Herbert Samuel as its leader, and the Socialists for being followers of Karl Marx.

Chaotic conditions in Europe, caused by the economic and moral depression, have fertilized the ground for all sorts of dictatorships and reactionary adventures. The epidemic is spreading. Under the cloak of “patriotism,” demagogues and charlatans in various lands are appealing to the basest passions and prejudices of the people, and the Jew is chosen as he scapegoat.

It is entirely unlikely that Mosley Fascist Nazism will gain much ground. The love of liberty and fairness inherent in the English people is certain to resist any attempts at the introduction of Hitlerism under any guise in England. Ernest Hanfstaengl, friend of Adolf Hitler and Nazi liaison officer with the British and American press in Berlin, has offered a donation of $1,000 to Harvard University for the purpose of crating “The Dr. Hanfstaengl Scholarship.” The condition is that the student awarded this scholarship shall use the money for a semester of study in Munich and another semester of study anywhere else in Germany.

In explaining the reason that prompted him to offer this scholarship, Hanfstaengl said:

“It is my profound conviction that my years at Harvard have since given me incalculable advantages, not the least of which consist in a knowledge of America and the world and n the spirit of discipline and fair play inculcated on the sporting fields of Harvard.

“American energy, character and idealism personified in men like Benjamin Franklin, Emerson, Longfellow, James, Eliot, Higginson and Roosevelt have ever been an inspiration to me.

The “fair play manifested by the regime with which Hanfstaengl is identified has become universally notorious, Benjamin Franklin, Emerson, Loge fellow, Hames, Elliot, Higginson, Theodore Roosevelt, who “have ever been an inspiration” to him, would unquestionably have been among the most vigorous opponents of the Hitler regime of bigotry and hate, if they were alive today.

Harvard cannot accept the Hanfstaengl gift for the simple reason that the condition stipulated would limit the scholarship to “Aryans” only. for if an American Jew were to win the scholarship, he would be humiliated as a Jew in Munich or any other university in Germany. He would be humiliated not only personally but also as witness of the persecutions and degradation to which his coreligionists in Germany are subjected by the Hitler regime with which Hanfstaengl is identified.

Harvard cannot accept the Hanfstaengl gift. The offer of this scholarship, which must be rejected, is but another evidenced of the strange mentality and folly of the Nazi leaders.
