ACCORDING to a wireless report to The New York Times, Professor Friedrich Schoenemann, in a lecture before the Academy of Political Science, in Berlin, declared that America is hostile to the new Germany and completely lacking in understanding of her, adding that the 15,000,000 Americans of German descent were of no use to the Germans, for only a handful had retained a sense of interconnection with the Fatherland. He also said that “at the present there is no bridge between the new Germany and America,” and that the growing sympathy in America for Germany after the war “was wiped out by the Nazi conquest.”
AND the learned Professor’s proposed remedy was not that Hitlerist Germany mend her ways and return to civilized standards of government, but that there was an urgent need for intensive propaganda in the United States, to be carried on without hemming and hawing. He urged that to conciliate America with the German viewpoint, the propagandists must have a proper regard for the American mentality. And the Professor concluded thus:
“If only the Germans knew more of the psychology of other nations they would suppress much stupidity and spite, especially within hearing of foreigners.”
The German Professor is more concerned that the Germans should not display their stupidity and spite in what the Germans are saying than in what they are doing and he is anxious that the German propagandists in the United States employ subtler methods of hoodwinking American public opinion than they have done until now.
And while Professor Schoenemann gave this advice to the Berlin Academy of Political Science, the American authorities seized 360 pounds of Nazi propaganda brought here on the North German Lloyd freighter Este. A large number of pamphlets in English, entitled “Germany’s Fight For Western Civilization.” were found among a heap of circulars and pamphlets in German. These misleading pamphlets have recently been distributed in vast numbers in England. A photostat reproduction of the title page appears in this issue of the Jewish Daily Bulletin. We also publish today an analysis of the distorted facts and figures contained in this new form of subtle Nazi propaganda.
LORD MARLEY
LORD MARLEY, deputy speaker in the House of Lords, arrived here to aid the victims of German Fascism. During his previous visit he addressed numerous audiences on the important and useful work
It is unfortunate, however, that in his statment regarding the possibilities of Biro-Bidjan as a settlement ofr the German refugees, Lord Marley was carried away by his enthusiasm to such an extent that he betrayed a woeful ignorance of facts. He mentioned excesive figures of Jews who had gone to Brio-Bidjan, Siberia, and failded to mention the large numbers of those Jews who have left that regions. His statement that the present population of 50,000 is fast increasing and that industrial development there is notable, is not brone out by the facts as published in the Soviet press.
The Biro-Bidjan prospect of a Jewish autonomous state has thus far failed to attrat even those Russian Jews who are suffering the direst need. It is not that Russian Jews are disinclined to work hard at pioneers. Aside from other considerations. they fear that the Brio-Bidjan region may in the near future become the scene of war between Japan and Soviet Russian, and the Jews can not forget so easily what happened to the Jewish civilian population in the regions close to the battlegrounds during the World War.
HIS LAST JOURNEY
DR. HYMAN ENELOW Radbbi Emeritue of Temple Emauel, who died of heart disease on board ship near Madeira, was one of the outstaning scholars in the Ameircan rabbinate. On January 27 he delivered his farewell sermon at Emanuel on the symbolic value of the Kaddish and shortly afterward sailed for a Mediterannean cruise.
Dr. Enelow was not a briliant preacher. He was rather a sincere and effective teacher. He led a lefe of seclusion and study. He loved the children he taught in his Bible school classes and his books above all else. His own books demonstrate his remarkable theological erudition and his profound devotion to the highest Jewish ideals. In the untimely passing of Rabbi Enelow, American Jewry has lost a modest and most valuable tacher in Israel.
