Former Soviet Jewish Prisoner of Conscience Ida Nudel has been informed by Soviet authorities that she will not be given permission to emigrate, according to information received today by the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry.
Last Thursday, Ms. Nudel was called into the local police office in Moscow where two representatives of the Internal Affairs Ministry told her that they were angered by the press conference she held following her return to Moscow last month from four years of exile in Siberia, and by the wide coverage it was given in the West.
Although Ms. Nudel explained that she only wants to emigrate to Israel, the officials responded that “267 million people have made lives for themselves in the Soviet Union,” and they advised her to do the same, the Conference reported.
