By a vote of 29 to 15 the city council of Offenbach last night reversed its previous decision and elected Dr. Herbert Lewin, a Jewish physician, head of the women’s clinic at the municipal hospital. Dr. Lewin’s election marks the end of a controversy which began in September when the municipal authorities cancelled his appointment because he was a Jew.
As a result Offenbach’s deputy mayor was suspended by the City Council. United States Military Government officials ordered an investigation. It was reported that the ousted official had expressed the feeling that Lewin “might resent treating non-Jews” because Jews had been mistreated under Nazi rule.
