Samuel M. Melton, local Jewish philanthropist, has given Ohio State University $500,000 to establish the Samuel and Esther Melton Chair of Jewish History and Studies, president Novice G. Fawcett announced yesterday. The chair, named for his late wife and himself, replaces the Melton Professorship they established in 1965.
Dr. Zvi Ankori, noted scholar in Jewish history who has been the only holder of the Melton Professorship, will become occupant of the new chair. He has been on leave from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and will now become a permanent member of the Ohio State faculty. Creation of the Melton Chair also has stimulated the university’s acquisition of a large and important collection of books and materials in Jewish history and related fields, purchased in Amsterdam at a cost of more than $20,000.
