Twenty-nine Ohio labor unions with a largely non-Jewish membership purchased a total of $1,587,500 in State of Israel Bonds at a dinner here Sunday evening. More than 700 leaders of various retail employes organizations joined in making the occasion the most successful demonstration of labor support for Israel in Ohio. David McDonald, president of Local 880 of the Retail Store Employes, was the guest of honor at the dinner which was addressed by Senator William Proxmire (D. Wisc.), who was the principal speaker.
Proxmire stressed Israel’s program of technical aid and guidance for the developing African countries. He said that Israel served as an inspiring example for the emerging African continent of democracy at work in a small nation at the same time as it provided valuable assistance in agriculture, education and economic development. McDonald declared that it was the responsibility of American labor to stand by Israel’s side and support its economic growth and its struggle for a just and lasting peace.
