The oldest Jewish cemetery in Latvia was saved from destruction today by the decision of the local court at Boysk. M. Y vanovski, a Pole, claimed that the plot on which the cemetery stood was his by inheritance. He had already taken steps to tear down the synagogue on the cemetery grounds and had permitted cattle to graze on the graves.
The arguments presented by counsel for the Jewish community of Boysk convinced the court and Yvanovski’s claim was not allowed. Considerable relief is being expressed in Jewish circles in Latvia that the cemetery was saved from desecration.
