Decorated with flags of all nations including the flag of the United States, the second Maccabiad the world Jewish olympiad, opened here this afternoon with 1,200 Jewish athletes from twenty-seven different countries participating.
The opening ceremony was one of the most impressive demonstrations Palestine has ever witnessed. It started with a fanfare of trumpets while the Maccabean flag was being hoisted to the tower of the stadium, which was filled to capacity with more than 10,000 visitors from Palestine and foreign countries.
PARADE OPENS GAMES
The Maccabean teams, their banners fluttering in the breeze, paraded onto the field to the cheers of the crowd. The parade was led by the Austrian team, in accordance with the order of the Hebrew

alphabet. It was followed by the teams of South Africa, England and the United States. The German contingent was the largest and the most representative of all the foreign teams.
The largest share of attention was drawn by the Palestine squad which consists of 1,000 members who entered the field led by their own band. Other teams are from Bulgaria, Switzerland, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, France, Syria, Morocco, Latvia, Lithuania, Danzig, Poland and other countries.
“This second Ma### symbolizes the fortitude the discipline, the morality and the unity of the Jewish people throughout the world,” Lord Melchett, the world president of the Maccabi Sports Organization, said in opening the games. His speech elicited three rousing cheers in Hebrew from the huge crowd in the stadium.
The games started in the afternoon, most of the teams being led by their fencers with drawn rapiers. The Palestinian team was led onto the field by troops of horsemen.
CONSULS ATTEND
The consuls of all countries attended the opening of the games, together with representatives of the Palestine government. They took their seats in the grandstand together with the members of the Jewish Agency. Dr. Nahum Sokolow, president of the World Zionist Organization; Dr. Chaim Weizmann, the ex-president; M. M. Ussishkin, the head of the Jewish National Fund, and the representatives of the Palestine government received a tremendous ovation when they appeared together with Lord Melchett in the grandstand.
Since a general parade from the city to the stadium was prohibited by the authorities the teams were compelled to march separately to the field through the streets of the city, which were bedecked with banners in honor of the Maccabiad. Taxi drivers have decorated their ears and the truck drivers their horses in keeping with the city’s festive mood.
A proclamation of protest was issued by the Revisionists because of the withdrawal of the invitation extended by the Maccabi Association to the Revisionist Betar youth. Revisionist members of foreign teams withdrew from participation in the contests and formed their own procession, together with the Betar youth, through the thronged streets of the city.
