A denunciation of the Ku Klux Klan and those who support it, was made here Friday night in the Municipal Auditorium by Rev. J. L. Beebe, Methodist minister, whose resignation recently from the Klan aroused considerable interest.
“The Klan,” Rev. Beebe declared, “is made up of four kinds of people: men who profit by controlling it; those who profit by splitting the fees; those politicians who profit through its machinations, and sincere people who labor under the impression that its perpetuity is essential to the nation.
“Groups have a right to unite in a democratic way, but no group has the right to organize to control despotically. If this sort of thing is allowed to go on, we shall have controlled political parties, press, business, industry and pulpit, all under the most despotic type of surveyance.”
Rev. Beebe denounced the organization as a “one-man Order,” made to serve the interests of an individual.
W. J. Harriman of Lincoln, Neb., who promised to tell of the Klan’s dark deeds, was prevented from doing so when over 1,000 Klan members who were present at the meeting, arose en masse and left the auditorium when he began speaking.
