On Monday, French President Jacques Chirac convened a special meeting of government ministers and announced that Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin would head a new Cabinet committee to combat anti-Semitism. The committee is to meet on a monthly basis, examining reported anti-Semitic acts and deciding on methods of punishment, Raffarin said. French Jewish leaders welcomed new government proposals to get tough on anti-Semitism.
