About one-fifth of the total annual quota for all countries has already been used up. The Irish Free State showed the largest number in proportion to its quota, 5,368 visas having been issued to that country up to August 31st out of a total yearly quota of 28,567. Heavy immigration from northern Europe has marked these first two months.
According to an announcement made by the State Department, visas have been issued as follows during July and August, the first two months of the present fiscal year: Poland was granted 1,155 visas, balance for the remainder of the year 4,827; Russia was granted 448, balance 1,800; Roumania was granted 54, remainder 290; Czechoslovakia was granted 543, remainder 2,530; Latvia was granted 71, remainder 71; Palestine was granted 77, remainder 29; Hungary was granted 65, remainder 408; Austria was granted 153, remainder 632; Germany was granted 9,762, remainder 41,465; Great Britain and Northern Ireland were granted 5,909, remainder 28,098.
