One Israel soldier and several Arabs were killed in a clash on the Israel-Jordan frontier near Beersheba last night, it was announced today. The Israel-Jordan mixed armistice commission has been informed of the incident.
The clash took place when a group of Arab shepherds, accompanied by an armed Arab escort, drove their flocks from Jordanian territory into Israel territory for grazing purposes. The announcement said that an Israel border patrol was met by fire from Arab Legion armored cars. The Israelis succeeded in driving the shepherds back across the border. The Jordanions’ armored cars did not penetrate Israel territory.
