One of the largest gatherings in San Francisco Jewish life in months assembled Sunday evening, January 22 for the installation of officers of the Free Loan Society (Chevra Gemilus Chasodim) one of the oldest of San Francisco Jewish charities.
Harry K. Wolff was installing officer. Special speakers were Dr. Louis I. Newman, Judge M. C. Sloss, A. J. Sugarman and Sylvvain Kaufman, president of the Federation of Jewish Charities.
Henry J. Heppner was installed as president, succeeding Morris Spiegelman, who served as president for fourteen consecutive years. He has been honored with election as president emeritus. William G. Weiss is executive director.
Louis Bloch was re-elected president of Congregation Emanu-E1 at the annual meeting of members just held-a session attended by several hundreds of men and women.
Max Somer was re-elected secretary and I. Warren Hellman Jr. was named treasurer. Daniel E. Koshland was elected honorary secretary.
Rabbi Louis I. Newman reported on the work of the religious school and group activity for the young people long educational, recreational and social lines.
Mrs. M.C. Sloss reported for the Religious School committee.
Newly-elected directors of the congregation are John C. Altman, Frederick Baruch and Samuel Dinkelspiel. Edwin S. Newman was elected to fill the unexpired term of Henry Mayer, who is traveling abroad.
