One Roumanian Antisemite for Every Jew Voting for Jewish List in Roumanian Elections: Jewish Party P

The Jewish List formed by the Club of Jewish Deputies in the last Parliament, has obtained 27,500 votes in the Parliamentary elections, as far as the results already available indicate, and by a coincidence the antismitic list of the Christian League under the leadership of Professor Cuza obtained about the same number of votes, in addition to which the even more militant antisemitic group of the Iron Guard led by Zelea Codreanu obtained 7,864 votes.

The Government has secured over 65 per cent. of the entire poll, and the National Peasants’ Party, which formed the Maniu and Mironescu Governments which preceded the present Jorga Government, obtained the second largest number of votes. The other parties had a very small poll.

CONVINCED GOVERNMENT WILL CARRY OUT JEWISH PROGRAMME DEMANDS DR. FILDERMAN SAYS IN COMMUNIQUE TO JEWISH POPULATION CALLING THEM TO VOTE FOR GOVERNMENT.

The Communique was issued following a letter which the Minister of the Interior, M. Argetoianu, addressed to Dr. Filderman, the President of the Union of Roumanian Jews, and two letters addressed to him by M. Duca, the leader of the Liberal Party, assuring him of their continued sympathy and support for the demands of the Jewish population.

Dr. Filderman is convinced, the communique said, that the Government will carry out the programme demands put forward by the Jewish representatives.

I have received your letter of May 20th. concerning the discussion which took place in my presence between yourself, the representative of the Jewish National Party, M. Zissu, and the General Secretary of the Union of Roumanian Jews, M. Sarateanu (reported in the J.T.A. Bulletin of May 13th.), M. Argetoianu writes in his letter. It was only a discussion of views. The hurling of personal insults which were reported in many newspapers did not occur in my office. The report of the discussion which appeared in the “Curierul Israelit” (the organ of the Union of Roumanian Jews) on the 11th. inst. is correct, the Minister adds.

The fact that circumstances beyond my own wishes prevented the conclusion of the election pact with the Union of Roumanian Jews, he proceeds, does not prevent me from assuring you that I hold the same feelings and respect for you as before and that it is the wish of the Government that I should repeat now that it will solve all Jewish questions in a way which will accord with the rights of the Jews within the framework of the interests of the Roumanian State.

I regret very much that the election pact of the Union with the Government could not be upheld, M. Duca’s first letter says. It would have been of general benefit. So far as I am concerned, I want to make use of this opportunity to express my most cordial feelings towards you and the cause which you represent. These feelings are well known to you, and, of course, remain entirely unchanged.

I consider it essential, irrespective of whatever decisions the Union of Roumanian Jews may adopt with regard to the elections following the abrogation of the pact with the Government, M. Duca’s second letter said, to assure you that the Liberal Party which places the interests of the country higher than the interests of an election, remains loyal to the programme of practical realisation of Jewish demands which was worked out by the late Jonel C. Bratianu, and remains loyal also to our friendly feelings and relations which are well known to you. The National Liberal Party will always defend the policy of fraternisation and the fulfilment of just demands, since it holds that this policy is of benefit both the country and to the Jewish population.
