Although there are still over 250,000 immigrants in Israel waiting for permanent housing, only 12,300 housing units are now under construction, according to Dr. I. Taneh, director of the Jewish Agency’s absorption department. It is expected that these units will be completed at the rate of 1,000 per month and the current building program will be completed in 1953, he said.

Dr. Taneh ascribed the lack of progress in housing, to a shortage of funds. Although the cost of construction materials had doubled in the past year, he said, the Agency’s allocation for housing had been reduced from 21,000,000 pounds to 14,000,000.
