Congressional failure to lift restrictive provisions of the Displaced Persons Act of 1948 will result in halving the number of DP immigrants who can be admitted to the United States during the month of November, it was indicated here today. Some 8,200 persons are expected to be admitted to the U.S. this month as contrasted with the average figure of 16,000 refugee immigrants.
(Approximately 85-90 percent of all DP’s who have entered this country have adapted themselves while the remainder have been confronted with various problems, the 12-state displaced persons conference now taking place in St. Paul, Minn., was told last night. Governor Luther Youngdahl, of Minnesota, who greeted delegates to the parley, declared that the DP immigrants could be termed “delayed pilgrims.”)
