The Moscow radio today reported that the Germans left only one Jew alive in Kiev, which had a Jewish population of 140,000 before the outbreak of the war.
When Red Army troops re-occupied Kiev last Saturday, they discovered only one Jew in the city, the broadcast said. The lone survivor said that more than 40,000 Jews were massacred by the German troops soon after their occupation of the city in 1941. Those massacred were mostly women and children and aged, since all able-bodied men and many young Jewish women retreated with the Russian armies.
The Jew took Russian military officials to the places where the Nazis mowed down the 40,000 with machine-guns and threw them into ditches, which served as collective graves. These graves will now be opened in order that experts of the special Soviet committee to register German atrocities against the civilian population may be able to establish the guilt of the Germans.
