######ons in amenorating ### present predicament of Jews in Germany.
THE TWO KINDS OF JEWS
“There are two kinds of Jews in Germany,” Mr. Naumann explained. “The old national German Jew was born here or he came here many years ago. He usually came alone. He was absorbed by Germany; and in turn he absorbed the German customs, the German psychology, and the German culture. Today he is as German as those whose ancestry goes back generations, on this country’s soil.”
The second type of Jew was described by Dr. Naumann as the “Eastern Jew.” From the ghettos of Russia and Poland, from the slums of Galicia, and from the ancient Near East, where the people and the country change slightly through centuries of time, hordes of Jews during the last thirty years have been coming into Germany.
“They did not come singly, in pairs, or in families; but, rather, they came in droves. And where-ever they settled they transplanted their Slavic and Asiatic culture. They neither changed nor wanted to change. Although they adopted sufficient of the German language to make known their wants, their spirit and their customs were still Jewish.
“These people have been nomadic within the memory of man. They have a sense of nationality—the Jewish nationality—and they carry their home and fatherland with them. They halt at this and that oasis to secure as much as possible of life’s necessities before wandering on. Their camps are found in the ghettos of every country: Whitechapel in London, the East
### during the past week by which the government appoints trustees for this property, who are empowered to pay sums for repairs and taxes from the estates of travelling owners, was believed by Dr. Naumann to be a preliminary to possible confiscation.
RESENTS ANTI-NAZI BOYCOTT
“We German Jews do not want protective measures from abroad,” Dr. Naumann said. “As much as any other German we should resent foreign nations boycotting our goods. The effect of boycott would be to arouse the ire of the man on the street; and we Jews would suffer more than ever. I have a feeling that the government intends improving conditions here for Jews very shortly.”
He states that even in the event of withdrawal of German citizenship from Jews, he and other national Jews prefer to fight their own fight without foreign intervention.
During the current oppression of Jews in Germany, Dr. Naumann and others of his circle have been active in attempting to quiet anti-Germanism abroad. A number of articles have appeared in minor periodicals in England and in the New Yorker Staats Zeitung under Dr. Naumann’s name in which he held that the position of the Jew in Germany did not call for outside aid.
For this attitude Dr. Naumann has lost the respect of many Jews in Germany, who consider his opinions perverted and not representative of those of the whole of Germany; and he has gained the contempt of the Nazi Party.
The “Preussische Zeitung” of Koenigsberg, official organ of the Nazi Party in East Prussia, recently commented as follows on one of Dr. Naumann’s articles: “The official courts of the National Socialist Party of East Prussia has recently sent us the following statement: ‘It is not enough that in the Nationalist Socialist state there is a Union of National German Jews publishing without hinderance a paper called “Der Nationaldeutsche Jude” which is alleged to be directed against the Zionists and which prates about the Jewish Germans and German-feeling Jews; but these people have the impudence to send this paper without anyone asking for it to leading party offices and leaders. Their purpose is not quite clear. Do they really hope to influence us?
“The official section of the party of East Prussia, which has also been visited with these press eruptions, wishes to state that it has in no uncertain manner prohibited their Union from sending us any more of its publications.”
