The first performance of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, comprising refugee German musicians, will be given in Tel Aviv on Dec. 26 under the baton of Arturo Toscanini, world-famed conductor, it was announced today.
The orchestra was organized by Bronislaw Huberman, Jewish violinist, who is at present in Vienna. It was Mr. Huberman who obtained Mr. Toscanini’s consent in New York to conduct the first four concerts of the orchestra.
Mr. Toscanini, who is receiving ovations at the Salzburg music festival, has said in explaining why he accepted the offer, that “each of us must do whatever is in his power to fight against barbarism. I shall be proud to come to Palestine to lead the orchestra.”
It is expected that the first performance will be broadcast to America. After conducting the orchestra in principal cities of Palestine, Mr. Toscanini may take the group for a concert tour of Egypt. Conductors of the orchestra who will follow him will be Hans W. Steinberg, Issay Dobrowen and Michel Taube.
