About a million more boxes of oranges were shipped this season from Palestine to Europe than in the previous seasons, it was announced here today.
The announcement states that during the entire season, 4,014,201 boxes of oranges were exported from the country as compared with 3,041,725 in the previous season.
The orange industry in Palestine will asume even greater proportions next season in view of the fact that new orange groves planted five years ago will begin to yield fruit this year. The High Commissioner of Palestine is determined to check the further development of orange groves in Palestine by imposing special taxation on any new land developed for citrus fruits. While the executive of the Jewish Agency intends to oppose this measure, the Jewish Farmers Association in Palestine is favorably inclined towards the step which the High Commissioner intends to undertake. The leaders of the Jewish Farmers Association believe that the entire citrus industry in Palestine will be endangered if new orange groves are cultivated, since there are no new markets for Palestine oranges abroad.
