The arrest of four top officials of the wartime German Foreign Office charged with participating in the deportation of thousands of Jews to their death in extermination camps was ordered here today by German prosecutors attached to the Nuremberg military court.
Meanwhile, a seven-and-a-half year prison term was imposed today by the Heppenheim degasification court on Werner Goerendt, former Nazi district chief, for participating in anti-Semitic pogroms in 1944. Dr. Karl Josef Fischer, former chief physician in the Oswisoim concentration camp, was arrested over the week-end in Gmunden, Austria, by U.S. Army authorities. An announcement from the Provost Marshald’s office in Austria said that Fischer conducted brutal “medical experiments” on camp inmates.
Police officials investigating the destruction of 28 tombstones in the Jewish cemetery in Hamburg by a band of unidentified vandals reported today that they had been unable to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
The Associated Press reported today that Dr. Philip Auerbach, official in the Bavarian Provincial Government, asserted over the week-end that Ilse Koch, wife of the former commandant of the Buchenwald concentration camp who has been charged with making lampshades of human skin stripped from camp victims, would be brought to trial before a German court. He stated that survivors of Buchenwald were pressing for such a trial.
