The Budapest Transport Company, following complaints by the Christian Socialist Trade Union, has ordered the deduction of three days’ wages from the pay of Jewish workers in the motor workshops who received full wages for three days they took off to observe Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur:
Egyenloesog, a Jewish weekly, protests against this action, saying almost one-quarter of the citizens of the capital are Jews, who pay taxes and contribute largely to the transport revenue of the city.
The Jewish religious community enjoys equal rights with the other religious communities, the weekly says, and those who observe Jewish religious holidays must therefore be treated no differently from those who keep Christian festivals.
