A sign of the times is seen in the decision of the Zurich Jewish Community to remove the organ from the Zurich Synagogue. The organ was called a relic of an epoch of false assimilationist ideals.

The vote on the issue was 177 to 67, with the two rabbis of the community and the Zionists among those favoring removal. The organ was introduced into the synagogue when the Jewish Enlightenment movement was in full swing.

Those favoring retention of the organ said the whole matter was not of great importance and argued that an organ was not forbidden by Jewish law.
