The organization of community councils to combat racism, prejudice and discrimination in communities where tensions seem imminent, and sponsorship of council programs by religious and social welfare leaders, educators, and public officials was recommended by a conference on human relations meeting here.
Under joint sponsorship of the Catholic Interracial Council, the Jewish Labor Committee, the Negro Labor Committee, and the Presbyterian Institute of Industrial Relations, the conference agreed that not enough has been done by educators among youth and among labor to reverse the rising tide of bias, bigotry and discrimination, and called for the collaboration of outside agencies in an advisory capacity with the proposed councils. Economic factors rank high among the causes for racial tensions noted by the conference.
