The possibility that ORT programs conducted in certain areas may be financed in part through the Marshall Plan was revealed here today at the second postwar congress of the World ORT Union. Dr. David Lvovitch and Eliahu Eliashar were among the ORT leaders who addressed today’s session.
The more than 100 delegates from 23 countries attending the parley were urged to adopt a five-point program providing for: 1. Increased fund-raising in behalf of the ORT; 2. Expanded efforts to secure governmental and intergovernmental subventions for the organization; 3. Efforts which would bring about the inclusion of ORT in countries receiving E.C.A. aid; 4. Transfer of heirless property to local ORT branches; and 5. Creation of a reconstruction fund.
Mr. Eliashar, who is a Sephardic member of the Knesset, reported to the delegates on the current situation of Jews in Arab countries. He emphasized the danger which would face these Jews if fighting in the Palestine area were resumed. Most Jews who arrive in Israel from North Africa and Middle East areas must be given extensive training for life in the new state, he said.
The present problems of the 30-35,000 Jews from Moslem countries now in Israel could have been avoided had these immigrants received vocational and other training prior to their arrival in the Jewish state, Mr. Eliashar declared. Emphasizing the importance of ORT’s programs in Israel, the Knesset deputy pointed up that young immigrants in the Jewish state “need the ORT’s specialized schools.”
