Efforts to send constructive relief in the form of vocational training equipment to Polish Jewry are being made by the World ORT Union, organization for the retraining of Jews, through negotiations with the Nazi authorities in Berlin, it was revealed here today.
Dr. Aaron Syngalowski, vice-president of the ORT, told a press conference that the Berlin branch of the organization was still functioning unhampered and had addressed a petition to the authorities asking permission to act as mediator between the ORT in neutral countries and the organization in Poland. Permission to deliver tools and material to ORT institutions in Warsaw and other Nazi-held cities was sought.
According to advices reaching the ORT here through Switzerland, the petition is being examined by the Gestapo, which has asked the Berlin organization to submit a detailed memorandum. At the present time, the ORT is operating legally in Poland the same as before the war. Its workshops, however, are suffering from a shortage of materials and equipment.
