The ORT will soon begin an education program for deaf-mute children in the ghettoes of North Africa, the World ORT Union announced here today. There is an unusually high proportion of deaf mutes in the mellans.
The plan calls for beginning education at the age of four and giving the handicapped children several years of academic education before leading them into vocational training. Older pupils, between 10 and 14, are already engaged in courses in carpentry and sewing.
A villa has been acquired and transformed into a small school housing 31 boys and girls between the age of four and 14. Dr. Sam Medina, a Spanish Jewish physician who studied teaching of the deaf in the United States, is in charge of the educational program.
