The tiny Agudat Israel faction in the Knesset has called for a no confidence vote, to be debated Monday, over the Cabinet’s decision to inaugurate television seven days a week in Israel. Political observers saw in the Orthodox faction’s move an effort to embarrass the National Religious Party since it was obvious that Agudat could not round up enough support to have the effort succeed.
As members of the Government coalition, the National Religious Party, which also opposed the seven day programing, was seen as being obliged to vote for the Government position. This would be exploited by Agudat Israel in the battle for Orthodox votes in the coming national election.
