Orthodox Jews here today celebrated the birth of the “new sun” in accordance with the ancient belief that the sun completes a circle of the universe every 28 years.
The first rays of the sun this morning were greeted by a colorful ceremony stop Mt. Zion where a gathering of Orthodox Jews recited the traditional blessing for this occasion and sang Psalms. The ceremony will continue throughout today and tonight and will end with the arrival of dawn tomorrow. Orthodox Jews throughout the world joined in the greeting to the “new sun.”
